Increase your chances of scoring by 81%

According to the research, there are specific zones on the pitch that has been used to differentiate between the successful and unsuccessful teams. This has been backed up by following the success of the France National team, Manchester United’s success under Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guaridola’s Barcelona & Bayern Munich. All looked to play through certain areas of the pitch more than any other sides.

We have put together an up to date review of the Zone 14 analysis brought out at the start of the decade and looked into how the likes of Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola, Thomas Tuchel and Mikel Arteta still utilise these principles to enhance their teams chances of gain success.

What is Zone 14?

Dividing your football pitch up into 18 equal zones you’ll find a 17.5m x 22.6m area situated on the edge of your oppositions area. This zone has been referred to as the ‘Golden Square’ in many different research articles.

A number of teams outside of the top flight of the game have utilised the research and built up key principles for their playing philosophy. It has also become a big educational part within the academy systems where you’ll see academy teams being educated as a basic level to build from.

It helps players understand what is involved in different (and key) areas of the pitch and more importantly as majority of academies play a rotational system through periods of the game, Currently watching a local academy game 8 different players were set in a specific role that would be found in zone 14.

How it's evolved...

Research into Pep Guariola’s training at Barcelona and Bayern Munich showed that his players had tendencies to play and dominate specific zones, changing depending on their roles and responsibilities of the players at the time. Pep has evolved the previous Zone 18 system into 20 zonal system each having different purposes and sizes.

Conclusion...

The video shows a in-depth analysis into Zone 14 though we have built a 4 take home messages from this research:

  1. Making a positive action within the first 2 seconds can significantly improve chances of scoring,
  2. The more successful teams will utilise this space more than others,
  3. Defensively, if you can limit actions in this zone, there’s a better chance of not conceding,
  4. Finally, this isn’t a philosophy to stick to though a good principle to use,
